Bachmann N scale GP7

The decoder appears to be on the fritz in this engine. It run for a few minutes; then gives up.
Wait an hour or so and repeat.
Has anyone replaced the Bachmann decoder with something else?
Everything is easily accessible inside, but not much vertical clearance.

I don’t have this particular engine but I have some other Bachmann diesels and I have installed Zimo 600 series decoders in them. They are switchers, so I don’t have to worry about trying to MU them with other units. I think they even have smaller decoders now.

I have since decided to use the ESU brand exclusively and have drank their kool-aid. I believe either brand makes something that would fit.

The older lokpilot micro direct might be a good choice.  It has leds already installed but you would have to hard wire it for the motor and rail/frame pickup (4 wires) and be sure nothing touches The frame that shouldn’t and shorts out

It looks like the lok pilot footprint will work, so will give it a try.
Thanks for the help

Had that happen with two of mine. I mothballed them after the decoders quit, haven't replaced the decoders yet. I am curious as to what your results are.

I wouldn’t have thought to use a plug g & play decoder as a wired decoder, but that is what I ended up doing.

I had a NCE N12A0 on hand, and it fit the Bachmann plastic mounting brackets just fine
.
Solder the motor leads to the decoder pads that normally connect to the motor tabs.

For track power, I drilled & tapped the frame for a couple of #90 screws; then just run wire to the pads that would normally connect to the frame.

Having the onboard LED’s makes this whole thing fairly easy.

The NCE equipped engine runs a bit faster than my other GP7 with the original Bachmann decoder. I ended up using the NCE 3 point speed table to get a good match (used the Digitrax CV table for a mainline engine).

Thanks for the ideas on this.
