I have lived in Ashton-under-Lyne for 15 years and have walked in Longdendale and travelled on trains on parts of the route of the old Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway.

This is the first of a couple of posts about that railway company, particularly about the Woodhead Tunnel.

This next post is a very short reflection on how the struggles of this smaller company ultimately left the Great Central Railway with its own financial struggles!

It may not be without controversy.
