Just finished this one.
Got the loco from a well known auction site as I didn’t have this one. After getting it fully overhauled and running sweet and quiet on dc, mostly achieved by cleaning out all the old OEM and hardened grease, gauging the wheels (these were seriously under gauge) and messing with gear mesh and clearances I went and installed the decoder. Had to do some frame milling mostly in way of where the motor wires come up and to clear the area under the decoder in way of the motor pads, to prevent shorts, and the rear shelf was filed down a tad to get a slightly deeper speaker enclosure.
Frame pick up was by two strips of pcb in the forward frame slots. The decoder is basically fully hard wired. 4 x 100uF x 20v poly tantalum caps placed forward, positive (blue wire) wired to the u+ tab and the negative (white wire) to one of the onboard caps on the left.
On fitting the shell it didn’t go all the way down at the front. There is a tab on the inside of the shell where the cab joins the long hood and this was touching the onboard caps (6) at the front of the decoder. So, took it all apart again and filed off 3mm at the top forward of the frame halves so I could move the decoder back a little to clear.
The photo below is marked to show where I mean.
