Locked Out
« on: January 31, 2020, 12:32:21 PM »
When I attempted to log onto the forum today, I received a pop-up message telling me to disable my ad blocker or I wouldn't be allowed in.  This is a first and, in a word, is bullshit.  We are inundated with enough advertising as it is.  I don't need to have it splashed all over a modelling forum.  I have donated cash $$$ in the past to help keep Railwire alive.  I figure I have done my part and shouldn't have to put up with advertising.  May have to re-think my membership if this persists.

Ok, so you rather force us to put up with more of that crap called "ads" on the Interwebs?
If you give me your PayPal address I'll gladly donate to the cause. After all, I had over 20,000 post of fun (and no so fun) time here.

Well, I distinctly remember sending someone in in the Railwire hierarchy $20 a number of years ago to help out.  Don't remember who.   Maybe I got scammed?

If advertising wasn't so insideous and continuously 'in your face' I'd probably let this go.  It has no place in a modelling forum in my opinion.  I understand running one of these forums costs money.  However,  I'd prefer a user pay option, not the use of ads.

Again, I'm not sure why someone couldn't white list Railwire. The ads here IMO aren't that big of a deal. For example, they don't move or cover content.

I don't think some people know they do have some control over the ads that are shown.

I don't mind the ads when I had to whitelist TRW. However, I don't really get web advertising and how it works, does the site get paid for the ads, or each time one of us clicks an ad?

I don't mind the ads as they presently exist.

Now that there are two threads, I'd like to bring up Mike's point from the other:

Oh, it's no longer just about the "internet experience", it's way past that now. The analytics are a key part of the composite feed that forms your digital profile. This dossier, maintained by Google, Amazon and dozens of anonymous data accumulators and brokers, determines things like your secret "consumer score" - similar to a credit score, but it directly affects how you are treated as a customer (or prospect) in person, by phone or online. Or your employment, or consideration to be employed. When you drill down into it, it's vicious stuff.

It's not the ads, I can ignore those just fine. It's the unseen data mining/tracking and selling of said data that upsets me- as long as there are ways minimizing my online presence I will.

fwiw, against my better judgement, I whitelisted the Railwire. If there are alternate ways to support this site short of ads (with mentioned trackers attached) or a 'premium' club, I'm all in.

Is there a way we can opt in for MORE ads?

Like a Railwire Thulium level membership?

Here's a Clerihew about Ed. K.

Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
But mention his law
and you've pulled your last straw!

Alternate version:
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."
