I think that is the operational concept that Hunter had for CSX!
I think you’re right... Also, isn’t it ironic all the cars are empties?

The thread subject project is certainly an accomplishment from an engineering standpoint and I commend the builder. Maybe he’ll develop the “centerpiece module” mentioned in the original post. Otherwise...

It's more of a kinetic sculpture than a model railroad...  I love it!

I have been involved in a show in Urbana, IL for many years that is free to the public.  On Saturdays it is always crawling with parents with young kids, and I could see them literally spending hours watching this layout.  And that is exactly what needs to happen for those youngsters to get corrupted and stuck on model railroading.  Kudos, gents!  What a great idea.

Does anyone else think one half of that could have commercial potential?  Helix building is hard!  Many would pay hundreds for such a convenience, I think.

I think the oval vs circle is also practical, if space is available.  Allows longer runs, lower grade, and re railing sections just in case.....IF there is a derailment, getting cars back railed on a helix is darn near impossible.

Oh man! I was at that show too. I looked up from the main floor, saw the pedal trains, and dismissed the area as something I didn't need to see. Shame on me indeed.
