New Bachmann 2-8-0

Just got two of them and I am pleasantly surprised. The sound is quite good and it runs well. There are three improvements I will do. Replace the stock speaker with a sugar cube (that should make the sound even better) and the tender is too heavy, that affects how many cars the engine can pull. Last is to replace the dummy pilot coupler with a Z coupler.

I wouldn't take any weight out of the tender because that could effect its pickup quality.
I do not know this for sure but it would make sense to me.

The tender weighs more than 3 ounces, pretty sure it doesn't need that much weight.

I picked up one of these and was surprised that the top speed of this run is quite a bit higher than my ones from the previous runs. Did they change the motor or gearing?

Didn't they replace the old Bachmann 5-pile skew armature motor with a new small coreless motor?

Well, the top speed can easily be trimmed, but how is the low end?

I was wondering the same thing. My old version with the 5 pole runs slow and smooth.

Measure the gear ratio. Can you turn the worm by hand with the shell off and count how many worm revs per revolution of the drivers? The old ones were 60:1, which is why they had such nice low speed and smooth performance. If they cheapened the motor and lowered the ratio, that's a big "ewww".

It might be that even with the same gear ratio the small coreless motor has much higher rpms than the old motor at a given voltage.
