Kato couplers aren't very "ops friendly". If reliable operation is desired, I would just install a standard N scale MTL coupler.

Okay, now I see, Ed.  What do you think about putting a 905 in there?  I'm only suggesting this because you put a lot of time into repainting and detailing this thing, and the coupler would be a really nice touch.

It would have taken less time repainting it if he had airbrushed it and added the louvres.

Here's a Clerihew about Ed. K.

Alternate version:
Ed Kapucinski
Every night, he plants a new tree.
He asks excitedly "Did you say Ménage à Trois?"
No, I said "Ed's Law."

I've thought about it, but given the work this thing will be doing, I think I'm going to need to make sure to balance appearance and operation. So, I think I might want to give it some time to see if the Kato coupler is fine, or if I should replace it with an MTL, and if so, which one.

I think one thing I can do though is hit it with a darker brown so it's not so contrasty and obvious.

The Kato coupler is great for a long train you don't want to break apart (think passenger), but not for operations.
