Why signals turned sideways?

Exploring the somewhat familiar environs here in our new residence
i came upon this railroad crossing
the track would have been former Reading lines

as the photo shows, the signals for the trains are turned 90 degrees
facing inward toward each other

it is not clear if they are somewhat automatically controlled
but the shed is probably containing whatever is needed to turn them
back to the position where they would be visible on the rails

any information about these would be appreciated

thanks!
sincerely
Gary

These are new signals which are not yet in service. Rules state that inoperable signals, new or old, are to face away from directions of travel so as to not invoke operating rules that require unlit signals to be interpreted as a stop indication. They will be turned into position as commissioning is completed.

thanks, Mike, i had not even thought of that possibility
yes, and now that you noted this, i remember how new they looked
the black was without visible spot of age or weathering
the shape of the visor(?) over the lights also has a new look for what
seems traditional for this area

thanks again
