Walthers Car Restoration Kit Question

Is it just me or does this building from Walthers share the same basic shape and footprint as the long out of production machine shop kit?

If so, I may be buying and repurposing the facility.

I wouldn't hesitate repurposing this building. As it is, it's a modern era building that could easily be backdated. If you model the modern era it doesn't even need to be trackside. Many of these obviously railroad served buildings still exist long after the railroad left town.

I like the footprint of the machine shop and it's an easy kitbash for what I need, but finding one is all but impossible. Even eBay prices, when they are available, are too high for the real estate market to bare.

That's the one. I consider $50 a bit excessive for it.

I agree, especially when you consider the building next to it in that photo came assembled (mostly) and painted for 20% less.

Agree with you there.  I consider all Walthers MSRP to be excessive.  But they have me trained to wait for their kits to go on sale at 30-40% off.  Or I just buy it on sale, and sooner or later find a place for it.  My machine shop came from my lovely wife, who found it on my list a few years ago, and gave me one for Xmas.

I figure the longer they have them at $50, the more likely I will be able to buy 2 or 3 more for $15/ea on closeout.

I remember you salivating over the possibilities you saw in those Tomix brick warehouse buildings a while back.

Pretty sure the restoration kit is another example of Walthers getting more mileage from existing molds I the N scale Cornerstone line, but hoping someone who has that kit and the machine shop can confirm it. Seems they threw in a $13 MSRP tank kit to the mix too.

BTW, MBK has a code up this week for an extra ten percent of Walthers items.

The footprint is 4 1/2" x 8 1/8" , not including the smoke stack in the width.  I have one sitting in my paper mill area, not sure what to use it for.

Power house, additives building, bleach house, recycle pulp division. Lots of uses.

Still looks just like the photo... Tore down the layout and built a door.

Yep. I finally broke down and got one. It's not a perfect match for the prototype, but it does the job.
