Question About GP9 Locos With Torpedo Tubes on Top

Were GP9s w/torpedo tubes used mainly for passenger service? I have a chance to buy a couple of Atlas GP9s, but only if they were also used in freight service.

You can use them in either service, but depending on that service, they might be equipped differently. Passenger units would have a divided main tank to haul water and have steam generators, freight units wouldn't need water so would have a larger capy. fuel tank.

I'm backdating a coupleof Walthers/Lifelike GTW green and yellow 4700 series GP18s to 4900 series GP9TTs with the help of Sunrise Enterprises roof air tanks and the Gold Medal Models GP 7, 9, 18 etched grills and fans. Does anyone have a picture of the steam generator?( Incidentally, the DCC conversion was astonishingly trivial.)

The Northern Pacific had a few GP-7's and many GP-9's equipped with torpedo air tanks and enlarged fuel tanks. 
Only a couple of GP-7's were boiler equipped for passenger service.

The NP had three GP-7s with steam generators, in two different orders.  550/551 were the first two GP-7s they bought, and 569 was the last GP-7.  None of them kept their boilers for very long, but you might be able to find a picture of one of them while it was there.

Rule #1 buddy. Plus if they started out as passenger units, most no longer are.

   at least 1 road has TT GP9s to get more fuel capcity,think
  it was C&NW,but will check the Diesel Era GP9 series again.

That was the reasoning behind all of the so equipped Northern Pacific GP-9's as well.

  here are the "As Built" numbers for C&NW and NP Freight GP9s
  with TTs:
  C&NW:
   1725-1756
  NP:
  214-240
  246-259
  261-268
  275-284.
   one could make a career out of modeling one of these roads GP9s,
  or if really determined their combined GP7-GP9 fleets.
  C&NW also had units from Mergers and bought secondhand to really
  add to the mix.
