Update on GHQ Pennsy R50b express reefer

From Michael Livingston:

It will be worth the wait for these R50b reefers by Greg Scott and GHQ.

The buff color has been a royal pain to reproduce on the ALPS printer, but I think that we are almost ready to prep a couple of pre-production R50b cars with lettering and paint schemes from a couple of periods. Cars are being prepped for their first appearance at the NP RPM modeler meet in MN this weekend. I will be posting pictures on Sunday.

Stay tuned for an update and new photos!!

So anyone attending the RPM event in Minnesota will have the opportunity to see the pilot models.  Of course, I saw pilot models of the Northern Pacific reefer and boxcar (along with the CN reefer) years ago at the Chicago MRIA show and they have yet to materialize.  But the fact that decals are being prepped is a positive sign that these models may see the light of day.

What box car and reefer is he referring to? I've seen the CN reefer and NP log car, and the SR depressed flat, but never the two NP cars. Were they special order or something??

Andrew Hegstad posted pics on the AMRR forum of completed, painted models quite along time ago.
The rub as I understood it was offering them as finished models rather than kits.
They've had some difficulty finding ways to have them painted/decorated to the standards of GHQ and to a lesser extent, domestically.
A couple of years ago, I tried unsuccessfully to bring them to market in kit form as exclusives of the NPRHA at the Tacoma convention.

Again, this is only my understanding of the facts and not verbatim from anyone @GHQ.

Years ago, possibly as far back as the late 1990s, GHQ announced three new cars that were to be offered RTR - an NP radial roof wood-sheathed boxcar; an NP radial roof wood-sheathed reefer; and the CN 8-hatch steel reefer.  They were to be painted and pad-printed, and there were pilot samples of each model.  For whatever reason, it was deemed too costly or difficult to bring the cars to market.  The CN car as we know was released in kit form last year.  But when I communicated with Greg Scott last, he considered the NP cars to be test-market items and had no plans to release them in any form.  Andrew was fortunate enough to acquire a sample or two of the NP cars, as I believe he decorated the pilot models initially.  As far as I know, the NP models in Andrew's possession are the only ones in existence.

UPDATE:  It was 2005, and it was the San Diego NSC Con where I saw them.  Here are pics.

Yea, I was excited about the CN 8-hatch cars until I saw the weld seams were represented as grooves. I know it's probably just me, but that was a turn off.

Pics have been posted of the painted pilot model in the PRR-n_scale group photos.  I don't know if the folder is open to non-members, but the link is:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PRR-n_scale/photos/album/1723474425/pic/list?mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&dir=asc

Looks good.  Lots of rivet detail.  The etched parts still need to be finalized.  MSRP will be around $35 for the kits.

No, I said "Ed's Law."
