Formslab Form 2 3D printer

Formslab has produced a new model of their Formslab 1/1+ printers.  Looks like it's more a refinement then anything groundbreaking.  The resolutions are the same - 25, 50, 100 and 200 microns, but the build area is slightly bigger and the PR materials suggest that it's faster.  They have doubled the power of the laser used, which may be the reason for the faster build time and the size of the laser spot has shrunk slightly (140 microns vs 155). Switching resins also looks to be a little more convenient.

Tech Specs:  http://formlabs.com/products/3d-printers/tech-specs/

Part design specs (Forms 1+ - apparently the same for the Forms 2):  http://formlabs.com/products/3d-printers/design-specs/

Sexy Marketing Hype:

Starter kit price: $3499. Delivering in November.  http://formlabs.com/store/us/form-2/buy-printer/

Additional resins $149-$299 per litre.  Resin specs: http://formlabs.com/products/materials/

I got to watch one of the Form1's working. (along with 2 laser cutters) He was using it for S and O scale parts, not really ready for HO or smaller yet. Someone else who designed 3D HOn30 trucks in Shapeways FUD had it printed with a Form1 and it was not good looking at all. Whereas the Shapeways trucks came out very nice.

Probably just another case of waiting till it works for smaller scales.

i'm assuming 'laser spot size' is what we'd call resolution and imo that needs to be sub-100 microns for n scale.

There is a Yahoo group for 3D "Steam Freight Car Printing" aka 3DSTFC and there is a guy named Bill Lane (He's an SPF) that bought a Forms 1+ last year and has been using it for S and O scale items.  But for the most part he's printing no detail items like motor mounts, tender floors, etc.  He has published some information on his web site http://www.lanestrains.com/

Do you know which resin he was using?  Formslab has two resins for 25 micron layers, the grey which is like the Shapeways FUD and the black which would be the FXD equivalent.

There are other colors which range from 200 to 50 micron targets.

More or less.  Think of it as layers either 25, 50, 100 or 200 microns thick of 140 micron diameter dots.  Depending on orientation it could be okay for N-Scale or not.  But no doubt a smaller spot would be desirable if the speed was suitable.

Shapeways FXD layer is 16 microns and resolution is 100 microns and it's just at the edge of being acceptable.

He was using grey. These are O scale doors

Also the HOn30 trucks I was talking about were printed in black. They looked like the detail was melted off and the had a warp to the thinner parts.

Yeah. That does look like they were left in the sun too long.

That looks like a whole lot of waste. It it reuseable?

Hardened resin?  I doubt it.

I guess if it was really cheap it might be worth it...
