MT 1021 and other T shank

After a rather frustrating afternoon, I am beginning to wonder if anyone has ever successfully assembled a MT 1021 (aka 001 02 021) coupler.  The box does not fit into the jig in any way that I can see, and even if it did, the jig would be pressing the T shank coupler into the box, making it impossible to get the spring in there.  The instructions are little to no help (especially those with the jig, that only demonstrate the more common forward spring design, but SAY that you can use it to assemble a 1021).

I have had my trials and tribulations with MT-5s and their descendants, but I can usually put together a batch while watching TV or something.  As near as I can tell, the 1021's main purpose is to support the sale of replacement springs and expand my vocabulary of cuss words.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I DID try a search, but did not come up with anything.  If this has been covered in the past, a reference would be most helpful.

Thanks

It's been decades since I assembled a 1021, since it's been equally long since a model was released that required it ... but the instructions used to be on or in the package.  You have to heat-seal it together with a soldering iron if I remember correctly.  Don't use the jig.  Use either the MTL self-closing tweezers or a standard pair of self-closing tweezers (or a hemostat) to hold the coupler together while soldering.

I did finally get it together and installed- I just had a couple - picked them up in an eBay junkbox, probably would have been better off if I had left them there.  Looked like they would be a better fit than a 1016 for a kitbash I am working on, but I think in future, I will just do whatever modification might be needed to fit a 1016.

I don't think I ever used one of those.  Lots of T-shanks, mostly on locomotives, but they fit the existing Rapido pockets.  Anything else got a 1025, even if I had to butcher the box to get it to fit.

The 1021 was originally designed to fit the pilots of Life-Like E units.

Actually might have been for the Arnold S2, which predated the Life-Like models.

Except MT recommends the 1049 or 1128s for the S2 conversion.

If memory serve, the 1021 was first released in a conversion kit for the ConCor/Rivarossi/Kato "SW1500".

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

Hey George,

Close, that was the 1022.
Which has the plate that goes above the frame. (For the modified 1021 to screw into)

Thanks,
Wolf
