LokSound install in a LifeLike FA

A friend asked if I could put sound in his FA.

Yep.

Didn't do a video of this one - it uses the same Alco 244 V12 sound file as the RS3's and my PA's (since there is no V16-244 left in existence to record).

I have two sets of L.L. FAs, been thinking of doing the same thing this winter. Thanks for the photos.

I have a pair to do as well. Just out of curiosity, just a preference to have the speaker under the roof fan rather than in the fuel tank close to the tracks?

As I see it having speaker close to the decoder simplifies wire routing. If the fan grille is open then that probably makes the sound to emanate from the top of the loco (not from the track). That is probably not as important as the simplified wiring. At least to me.

In addition to the simplified wire routing, I don't like fuel tank installs because of the lack of depth for a proper enclosure for the speaker.   The enclosure that I use (John LeMerise's 3D-print for the Soberton 8x12mm speaker) is 6mm deep; there isn't 6mm of depth in the fuel tank (in fact, there is only about 4mm of depth there).  Shallower speaker enclosures don't provide the best sound quality, and I also think that having the speaker fire down at the track muffles the high end a bit, so that the horn and bell don't have quite the same "sparkle" (you can mount the fuel tank speaker so that it is firing up into the chassis to help with this, but then wire routing becomes even harder and the depth problem remains).

There may be situations where the fuel tank is all there is for speaker mounting, but all things considered, I like to have the speakers on top of the chassis if possible.

By the way, this installation required a lot of milling of the frame to make space for the decoder, speaker and keep-alive caps,  as well as a small channel on each side of the frame to route the pickup wires to the phosphor-bronze pickup strips.  This is not one I'd try to do without a milling machine, given the nature of the chassis.

Your explanation regarding from where the sound emits is logical, and I like your arrangement the components.  It is simpler than having the speaker in the fuel tank.  I have a milling machine so this wouldn't be a deterrent for me.

List of components used for this install:
LokSound Select Micro with 12-cylinder ALCo 244 sound file installed
Soberton 8x12mm speaker (available from Digikey)
3d-printed enclosure from Keystone Customs (John LeMerise's shop on Shapeways)
Two AVX 16v, 220uf 10% tantalum chip caps (Digikey)
Surface-mount 603 warm white LED for front headlight (I think I got these from Traintek LLC)
1k, 1/8 surface mount resistor on a tiny piece of circuit board (LED dropping resistor) (Digikey)

Nice! This might be your cleanest looking install yet! :o I really need to get a milling machine :| ;)
