I'm considering buying it just to see how well the Peco turnouts are doing without any DCC-modifying after these years!
There is nothing to see. They work.
We built friends layout (starting in the early 1990s using Peco turnouts. The layout has been DCC almost from the starts and other than couple of broken throwbars (attributed to too much pressure exerted by the Tortise switch machines), the turnouts have been trouble-free and reliable. Few (but not all) mainline turnouts have been modified by gluing in a styrene strip inside the guard rails. But that is a gauge issue (not DCC).
The frogs are powered through the Tortoises. But I don't consider that as a Peco modification (this should be done to all metal-frog turnouts). You should never depend on points to reliably supply power. Case in point: another friend who uses points (on Peco switches) to route power. It is often a struggle and frustration to keep the trains running. No matter how clean he keeps them.
After operating on both layouts I see a clear choice: a little extra work upfront and years of trouble-free operation, or taking the
lazy easy way out and having to constantly deal with a problem. It is no fun when trains don't run well.
