Kato NW2, DCC'd cogs in low speedsteps?

Geez!   How can motor cogging cause intermittent electrical connection (which are clearly indicated by the headlight flickering) when I'm holding the loco upside down and I'm pressing the power supply leads against its wheels.  But when I take the same leads and touch them to another part of the loco, the motor runs smoothly and the headlight is steady.  I give up.    I don't have any need to add anything else to this until I clean whatever is in the truck causing the problem.

And to repeat what I said earlier: 3-pole motors with very long skew-wound armatures exhibit almost no cogging. If you don't believe me take one of the NW2 motors and turn the shaft by hand. As you will notice, there is almost no cogging taking place.  It will be the same when the motor is powered and running.  But straight-wound 3-pole motors have very pronounced cogging (I will agree with that).

there are a bunch of possibilities in all this.
the best outcome is to find a way to get a decoder to
make the loco run smooth.

please notice that I did not say "mask the problem of a three pole motor."
this is because I am not looking to prove a point on that subject.

I never did like how these NW2's ran and could always get slower smooth speed from LifeLike SW's. When I first got my NW2 I tore out the motor and used a 0816 with a 4:1 gearhead. Since then I pulled the motor to use for something else and my NW2 is still in parts for the last 8 years. I was hoping the Bachmann NW2 chassis would fit the Kato body.

Well arent you the fancy pants Got any pics of the install? And maybe links to the parts? I might be interested in this as a project later on. I guess you tossed the stock reduction gears?

No pics any more. I used the stock plastic motor clip to hold the new one in place and center it between the frames. Filled in the hole where the flywheel was. All stock gears with ACC on the shaft that always spins loose. Basically you take a $75 loco and put a $75 motor in it    Kato could make really nice locos

sizemore? are you serious that you want a coreless in there?

you may want to get and try the Kato FEF motor (or the HO version that I can't recall...)

I suspect it will fit.

I think that is a little shorter than the nw-2 motor.
the dimensions are 7.7 x 11.6 x 22.2 mm according to a old review

if that is the case.... a motor mount and you are off to smooth city.
....assuming the pick-ups work.

I'd consider the option.

I just finished tinkering in the ACME Labs. The TCS decoder has a CV feature to control BEMF, CV182. This setting has three stackable (ie. add the numbers, program the CV) 0 is BEMF - Off, 2 is Automatic BEMF with all the bells and whistles, aaaaannnnd... 1 is BEMF for 3 pole motors! I set it to 3 (1 + 2).

Set it and speed step:

1 is smooth.
2 is smooth.
3 is F-- (visible cogging)
4 is D+   (semi visible cogging)
5 is smooth.

So for now its good enough until I dig into it as a repaint and detail job at some point in the future. The coreless FEF motor sounds like a really viable option, @victor miranda have you sized up the coreless? Too afraid to take mine apart until I have to do a decoder install.

Ahem...

Chris' engine does not just have a coreless motor in it.
It is using a coreless 0816 PLUS a 4:1 gearhead. 

Embrace it.    This is a switcher.   Let it top out at 15-20 mph, and prepare to be amazed by what
a gearheaded engine can do.

I was mostly going by the dimensions of both motors.

the FEF does not have a gearhead so I had decided it may
have enough power to drive the mechanism

I am sure someone will get around to that job eventually.

I am glad you found a 3 pole back-emf setting
if that gives you smooth, our world is a better place!
