They need to get rid of those damn molded on boiler handrails. Filing them off is a nightmare, and drilling small holes for stantions into their diecast is almost impossible.

Amen to that!
The metal boilers add needed weight, but are tough to modify...

The hand rails illustrate the "damned if you do; damned if you don't" choice faced by mfg's every day. If you leave them on, a small, vocal percentage of modellers will be upset because removing them makes detailing their modeller harder.... if you leave them off then a small, vocal percentage of modellers will be upset because you missed a simple detail.... if you add wire hand rails to the model and thus cost (assembly cost is growing percentage of the model costs these days) then a small, vocal percentage of modellers will either complain about the added cost and the need for extra details OR will complain that the extra wire detail is oversized and looks crappy.....

You pick your poison and hunker down for the reaction...... there really isn't a right answer.
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

As far as I know, Model Power's 4-6-2/2-8-2 hard metal boiler is the only wide spread steam engine thats been made within the last 15 years that has modeled on handrails. Bachmann, Concor, Kato, Athearn and Intermountain all have normal handrail/stanchions. Id be willing to pay a lil more to have the same MP steam with normal handrails like everybody else manufactures.  I own their pacific and mikado. Both are dissasembled, with much difficulty filed off the extra metal, now stuck trying to drill holes into this super dense boiler for stanchions.

I've got 4 running around the layout now and can't tell if the railings are molded or not from a couple of feet away. Maybe I'll just highlight them with a little grey dry brushing if it gets to bothering me.
Modeling Southern and N&W in the southeast.

If this model will use the MRC sound decoder I'm surprised nobody commented on that yet.

I thought the same, Peteski. I have no experience with MRC decoders myself, so I can't comment. But people aren't usually shy about bashing their sound units.
