I haven't seen it mentioned here, but the mass retirement of the last of their draper tapers has begun at CN (actually began in spring 2020). About a third of the fleet is already sold off the scrappers, with something like 20 sitting at Southern Yard on the east side of the Welland Canal at Welland, Ontario, both CN 2400 series and BCOL 4601 series units.
As well, a few of the 2100-2134 series (ex CNW C40-8) and 2135-2199 series (ex ATSF C40-8W) and one of CN (IC) blue ex LMS C40-8W's is included.
Those along CN mainlines have been somewhat spoiled with the unique fleet of CN original purchase oddballs as well as the second hand fleet of GE -8's and EMD SD60's that CN acquired a decade ago. Looks like our luck is running out. Though many SD40 variants still operate, they're clustered in specific areas (Edmonton and the former DMIR for example) and not roaming system wide. Same with the SD60's which have graduated to local and in many cases, RCL equipped yard units.
With respect to the C40-8M's, get your shots now. The survivors are probably safe over winter if grain traffic is particularity heavy. As well, if the weather is typically cold, operations across the prairies and northern Ontario will become congealed, the resultant delays absorbing locomotives like a sponge. I'd suspect by spring they'll be gone. Or if the economy collapses...
