Question About Atlas N 50' Flats w/Trailer(s)
« on: December 15, 2014, 01:05:28 PM »

I found some Atlas 50' Flats w/trailers that I can get cheap.

My question is, were the railroads still using 50' flats to transport trailers in 1971?

Thanks for your replies.

Hmm... I have absolutely
no interest at all in this
question...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

 :?
   Kiz,
    may depend on the RR.
which RR are You interested in ?
the 50' Converted Flats from cut down boxcars didn't start until
   the early 80s,XTRA,C&NW,Southern,and others.
in the 50s some 40' flats were converted from boxcars.
DL&W cut down 40' Quad hoppers and built a new deck on the frame
of some of their  1955 era pig flats.
EL did use some Erie 50s converted to  trailer service flats until CR
day if they were needed, but these were the 53' AAR type flats, not
50' flats.they did try to keep a supply of TT 85' to 89' flats  in reserve,
  but it wasn't always possible.

Kiz, it might also depend on what paint schemes were on the trailers too. That is IF you are trying to be close to proto. Rule 1 does apply though.

These flats/trailers are going to be for my Kisatchie, Gulf & Northern RR. So I suppose I could use the flats/trailers.

Hmm... there goes Kiz,
distorting the space-
time continuum again...

Well, actually, the KG&N stopped using 50' flats in TOFC service in 1970.   :D

Ratz! You'd think I'd know my own railroad's history... :P

Hmm... and Kiz with a
B.A. degree in history...

The BN still had a few 50-53 ft TOFC flats that late, inherited from the GN and NP.  How often they were used I don't know, but they had them.
