If only the N Scale Magazine CD ROM's were a bit cheaper ($80 is a bit high) and up to date (latest one is Nov/Dec 2009).

Considering that the issues are stored as standard PDF files (not some proprietary restrictive format) I think the price is fair.  Also, the next volume will come out next year (since they come out every 5 years).

Were they hacked, or was it a DMCA takedown?   Copyright laws are pretty strict, and perhaps some of their older content was actually owned by someone?

It must have been a hack, as TrainLife had acquired the rights to all of the magazine content that was archived on the site.

I emailed TrainLife and got a quick response! Someone is working on repairing the site and it (hopefully) will be back up in a week or so (or so I was told, no promises). It was a hack that took it down since they do have the rights to everything they have up there...the magazines that are there are out of business as well so I don't think that there's anyone left to sue anyway.

You might be surprised.  In many cases, even if a publication is out of business, a person or company still owns the copyright.  In a few cases authors have used this to prevent their works from being rereleased at all until the copyright(s) expire.  However, since TrainLife has acquired the copyright, or has permission to use the material, there's no problem.

I took the photo of UTLX 90966 shown below because it reminded of the old Atlas chemical tank car from the early 1970s.  I know the dome on the model is taller than the dome on the prototype, but this is the closest thing to the prototype for the Atlas car that I have found.  I thought ESM may have used the same tooling several years later.

I know this does not help with solving the problem of how to route the car on a layout.   :?

We did.  We commissioned RivaRossi directly to produce our items on their model utilizing artwork we supplied, and it was a pleasure to do business with them.  Quality work delivered precisely on schedule.  I wish they still were around.

Most of Rivarossi's cars were nice.  Other than the clunky wheels and over-thick roofwalks, standard for the time, they don't look bad today.

Carter:  Yes, that does look like the Atlas car.

I did a little more digging into my photos of old tank cars, and came across this rather poor photo of VICX 7220.  My April 1985 ORER has the VICX reporting marks belonging to the Vista Chemical Company.

Even though the photo is dark, you can see the chemical residue on the side of the car.  So, you could probably be safe in routing this type of car to/from either a manufacturer of chemical solutions, or an industry that uses chemical solutions.

Neither of which I have, so it looks like this is another interchange car.  Thank you, everyone!

Back when I was first assembling my freight car encyclopedia, Paul Graf helped me out with prototype information for a good number of Atlas's early cars. But IIRC, this was one of the few where he had no idea what prototype it might have been modeled after.

Mark,
looks to me like a N-Scale Model of Athearns chemical tank car - which had no prototype.   :o

However some cars are close : http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/88/t/214924.aspx  :D

There was a RMC article in the early 80s converting the Athearn car - by replacing dome etc.
Using the RR car with Atlas beer can cars parts should be quit easy - Have lots of both, will try

The RivaRossi model is not based on the Athearn model.
