Some of y'all may recall from my younger days that I had attempted to scratchbuild a Lima centercab. Well, recent changes have caused me to look back into this and other interests.
It just so happens, the wheelbase of an S4 is close enough for government work, and the hood length is dead on, for a Lima switcher.
Progress so far; this is looking from the cab end.
Note that the 3D printed model will not have much in the way of detail; it will require the addition of louvers, etc. to complete. Basically, anything that would get in the way of sanding the shell is out. I do plan to etch many of the detail parts, and may even be enticed into selling a few hoods and etch sets for those that are interested. I'm also looking into etching new sides for the Alco cab to get those funky Lima windows. Battery boxes and numberboards will need to be scratchbuilt. Louvers will be Archer. I need to find a proper headlight, too, since that falls under the category of things that would get in the way of sanding.
Still to be done on the 3D model:
Roof hatch
Scale it to N (it is currently modeled at 1:1)
Put holes in place for radiator louvers (to be represented by Evergreen siding cut to fit)
Hole for headlight
Hole for stack
Drill dimpls for grab irons
Roof radiator grill (will be etched, but need a hole for it)
Draw etchings, including two side grills, roof grill, various details such as windshield wipers, handrail stanchions, cab sides.
Note that the Bachman donor will also be donating the side sills; the hood will have to be cut off.
Let me know if you're interested in a hood and etch set. The cost is still to be determined, but it will be just enough to cover the expense of having everything made.
