Absolutely correct. Use glass. I use Ragu jars...

...  I guess a normal plastic container should be enough to soak them in.  I just hope it gets here soon!

Glass is better.  Keep it sealed other than inserting and extracting the parts to minimize evaporation.

Mike:  Thank you.  Not sure I want the stuff inside, even if it is in a metal can...

As long as you take the precautions it's not an issue. Those of us that have worked in graphic design field are very familiar with it. Not so much anymore but back then it was a common item in the paste-up room. I keep mine sealed in a glass jar that serves as a FUD soakitorium.

Peteski and Jimmo:  True, it would be safe with precautions, but I'll probably avoid it, because I have no need for it.  It's more a matter of what one is familiar, and comfortable with, than absolute safety.  I've never dealt much with chemicals, so tend to distrust the more volatile ones.  My father didn't trust electricity, but burning trash in dry weather didn't bother him a bit.  He couldn't understand burn bans, or how I could change a light switch without killing myself.  Of course, he also never learned to turn the water off before working on a faucet...

I was asking partly for anyone living in an apartment or other location where potentially hazardous materials may be restricted.

And, while I do have some paint thinners, they tend to stay in our old house, now a storage shed.  I use very few non-water based paints, and most of those are spray cans, which are used outdoors.  It's not so much safety, although that's a factor, as that Mom and I don't like the smells.  Also, most of my work is in plastics, and many of the paints and their solvents don't mix well with plastic.

Incidentally, gasoline was sold for years as a cleaning solvent, in hardware stores, until people figured out that it would work in horseless carriages.  Henry Ford's early cars were designed to run on ethanol, with the idea that it could be made locally.

The other nice part about using glass jars is that when the Bestine gets a lot of wax in it you can put the jar in the freezer and freeze the wax in the bottom them you can dump the good solvent into another jar.

Wondering if anyone has ordered something in "strong & flexible" nylon from Shapeways?

If so how did you clean it?

It doesn't smell like FUD parts. I put some FUD parts along with these: http://www.shapeways.com/model/1884295/hon30-interior-for-f-c-coach.html?li=user-profile&materialId=6 in a jar of Bestine. The FUD came out clean while the nylon parts had tons of powdery stuff under all the seats. It was a pain to scrape it all out. I don't think it is wax.

This tells you how to paint it, but not clean:

You don't need to, I have some black and white.  It's a bit rough but strong and does the job.

I use the Strong & Flexible, but not for detailed models.  I use it for fixtures, brackets and such that are hidden from view.

If you find the thread on N scale wind turbine blades, they IIRC were made from strong and flexible nylon.  I seem to recall that it is a porous material.  To me it seemed too rough for N scale detail item.

I agree it is rough for N, but it works for the interior I linked to. I guess the powder is the same that is sintered to make the part. anything that woudl dissolve it would do so to the whole part. Only way to clean is to pick, poke, and tap till it all falls out.  :|   The same user on Shapeways has a bunch of other nice items, but hardly any are available in FUD  :?  He says they will break in FUD
