ESM X-58 in CB&Q

Could either of you comment on how these cars were used? Dedicated service? I would like to pick one of these up for occasionall loads of beer.

From Morning Sun Book's "CB&Q Color Guide...", page 53:
"The majority of these cars were not in assigned service"

I have homemade rosters for Hill Line freight cars copied from Pasco Yard hump lists my father brought home in 1973.  They list three of these cars, carrying "paper", "cnd veg", and "Alumbars".  I assume the latter is "aluminum bars", but you know what they say about assuming things...  In any case, they seem to have been used for a variety of clean freight.  I don't see any reason they couldn't have hauled beer, although they aren't insulated, like the true "beer cars".

Thanks for the info. I had thought that they were insulated but see now that they are XMLs. These are nice looking cars so I can use one I'm sure.

How were the beer cans made? Aluminum

I don't know that beer has to be insulated.  It probably depends on the type of beer and container, and maybe on the time of year.  The biggest danger would seem to be freezing.  But, then, I don't know much about beer...

Chriss333:  Yes, the bars could be going to a can factory.  I have no idea what size bars, but smaller ones could easily be rolled into sheet.

Any chance of other prototype cars that could also be done. In the future in the Q?

This one is not 100% prototypical, but it is very close.  To make it 100% accurate, you have to extend the lower sill to over the trucks (or remove the current sill and add a new one), and you must remove the roofwalk supports and (I believe) paint the roof aluminum.  They weathered over significantly, so heavy weathering may be all that is needed.

These were XML designation, so I don't think they would have carried finished canned/bottled beer.  The ESM cars released so far that would fit that duty are SKUs 222118 (PRR); 222201, 222202 and 222205 (LV); and 222301, 222302 and 222701 (PC).  More RBLs are coming in future releases.  But the XMLs definitely could have seen service in transporting aluminum sheets for container fabrication.

No future CB&Q prototoypes, but there will be future X58 stand-ins.

I am waiting to get mine - I remember as a car checker on the Great Northern in the late 60s seeing these cars being loaded by Scott Paper Co (various paper products) and Weyerhauser (fine pulp rolls) in Everett Washington - I thought at the time they were great looking cars.
