I'm thinking of ordering the CP set and then trading 1 for a CN and sell the other two at my cost.

What was Kato thinking when packaging these rare cars in sets..????

I don't see these cars as rare CP has around 375 of these auto racks. They were only introduced in 2004 and are the most current type of auto racks. I have no problems with them coming in a 4 pack. If red caboose had made them they would of done them in 6 numbers and i would of had to buy them all in singles so what is the difference. It is no different than when they put out the amfleet sets then 6 months later they put out single cars. They will put out single cars in the second run.

Well most of us have only seen these cars either as one or two in an entire train.  So its why most of us only want one or two and not four.  Or atleast that is how I feel about it.

Chuck @ FRT was able to split a set for me: 2 CN and 2 CP in a single 4-pack.  He had another customer who wanted the same thing.  Your dealer may be willing to strike a similar deal.

I agree Gary, in absolute terms not so rare and a poor choice of words on my part...

Just that the autorack trains I see (and they are loaded with CN and CP cars) rarely have more than 1 or 2, and honestly I don't think I've ever seen more than one on a single occasion.

But, hey, they look great...   so count me in...

I have a CP set that I would trade 2 CP's for 2 CN's.

For those that have added weight to their cars, about how much weight did you add?

I really need to invest in a scale...I know...

I have over 200 Kato coal porters and they all have pickup as well. All Kato cars have pickups this is why they roll so well the metal pick ups and the metal wheels. I ran my set of CP auto racks today with my RC cars. they run great and look great for the price. keep in mind that RC cars are $40 MSRP and Kato is $100 for 4 cars so $25 a piece. I will get some photos tomorrow.

I think there is some confusion about pickups versus "shock absober construction".  The coal porters have the tabs for shock absorbers, but the truck itself does not have the phosphor bronze pickups.  If you look close I think the truck sideframe is entirely plastic.

Still, Kato clearly advertized both features on their website (which I quoted early in this thread)..
