New York Central considered electrifying the main line to Buffalo after the war. Would have been much cheaper in the long run. But, management had doubts future business would justify the initial cost. So no go. They were correct. The New York State Thruway, the Saint Lawrence Seaway, dredging of the Hudson River, and improvements to the New York State Barge Canal (old Erie Canal) and state highways cut severely into the Central's business.
