Several questions

I have had the pleasure riding the Metro North Railroad several times in the past couple of weeks and was pleased to see freight spotted at several spots (boxcars/centerbeams at one location, reefers at another) between White Plains, NY, and Harlem. I know the MNCR has a lot of power, and I presume they do the vast majority of their switching at night, but I was curious as to where are there interchange points (and with whom, CSX?).

Next topic, at about what point did covered hoppers begin to be leased? Was it from their incarnation or was it later on down the road when banks/other leasors realized they could make money on them?

There have always been leased covered hoppers, but they've become much more common in recent years.  Partly it's for the same reasons tank cars have long been leased or private owner.  Large industries can lease their own cars, and guarantee availability, rather than relying on the railroad having enough cars at the right time.  Think grain harvest.  Also, as cars, and loads, become more specialized, and cross-contamination becomes more of an issue, it makes sense to control the car, to make sure that no one puts something in it that will affect your next load.
