Decal Question

Ok, I picked up a couple WOT baggage cars cheap where someone had applied decals directly to the plastic without gloss than decal than dull coating them.  On one the decals have almost all fallen off which is fine with me because I was going to remove them and do a different road name.  On the other the decals are all intact and seem to be holding just fine.  You can see the clear outline from the decal so I know they weren't applied correctly.

So to my question, if I just dust it with a dull coat will they stay on and look fine or do I need to strip them off and redo the whole process.  I have never tried any short cuts so I just don't know.  I don't mind putting the work in but if they will work with just a dull coat I don't want to reinvent the wheel here if I don't have too.

Wow! I don't know the answer, but I have the same question. I just grabbed a cheapie hopper car that was (ahem!) customer lettered. I got it just for fun, but it has this same problem. The decal film is clearly still visible from where the decals were not applied correctly. I'm wondering, too, if there is any way to make the decal film disappear, even if just a little bit.

It sounded like a good idea at the time... too bad the caboose wasn't in on the plan.

Brian,get a brand new X-Acto blade,and poke a bunch of tiny holes in the decal.Use those holes to try to get some Microscale Micro Set under the decal.Just start on one end,and let the stuff flow under it.If there's enough glue under there,it may fix it.Dullcoat after it looks okay..

You could also utilize a small pin from a dress shirt.  That's what I use.

You can also try dipping a Q-tip in some Micro-sol and roll it over the decal while applying a little pressure. I've had to do this a few times to 'fix' a spot where a little 'silvering' or bubbles have occurred around  rivets or other non-smooth surface. like mentioned above, poke some holes or slit the decal film to let the Micro-sol  get underneath the decal. This will work in most cases even though the decal has been oversprayed.
