Actually, freight trains that needed to get somewhere quick and there was no available M1 would usually use double headed K4s. This was until the Depression and surplus locos were used instead. There is a picture of a single K2 pulling the Man o' War in 1925 in a Keystone issue I have.

Now that's a picture that should be shared!

Can anyone with a C55 comment on its pulling power my kato C57 can pull about 8 passenger cars up a 15" radius helix 2% grade

I'm sure it's fine. It's a Kato loco. They aren't known for being bad pullers or underpowered.
