Help with engine facility

  Sup all!!!

I finally fixed the yard on the "south" end,, so that allowed me to work on the "north" end. Here is what I have now.

I thought about using the walthers car shop or back shop kit(s). DRD,,brought the point that you could put LED's in the building, making a pretty cool scene. I just am lost... I want fueling/sanding ops. Light repairs, or what ever. I guess you could say I want a super busy area. Some thing to hold any where from 10-20 locos. A place park hacks and MOW would be cool also.

So any and all input is welcome...thank you in advance.

I spliced a pair of Walthers backshop kits and made a flat roof...  My engine facility would fit in your space I think:

Depending on your era and what area you're modeling, the brick building of the Walthers kit may be a bit out of place.   A "terminal railway" would likely not have something all that grandiose.  Something like the Bachmann car shop, or Pikestuff's offerings would probably fit you a little better.  They just need to be aged/dirtied up appropriately to fit your era and locale.

I think you live right near BNSF's Temple facility, and that's probably something akin to what you're trying to model.  It's a moderate-sized running repair facility, perfect for modeling; and right nearby for you to get pictures of it (it's fairly well accessible from public streets on either side of it).  Here's a link to a good view of it

Somewhere in my library is an series of articles on an Erie diesel facility. It was built to handle when FT's were brand new and when they were run in a matching 4 unit consist. I believe the building was big enough to hold 4 tracks with each track holding 4 units. It looks a lot like Dave's.

The article may also have info on how the fueling and sanding facilities were arranged.

I'll try to locate it. I think it was in RMC.

I believe the building was expanded or the years. It was originally buit in 1944 to service two FT sets A-B-B-A on two tracks and two A-B in the repair bay...

Dave,, that is what I was thinking about,,but then mark brought up a good point,, pikestuff buildings would probally fit me better. Or I could even combine the two.

For example, when I worked for the C&NW in 93,, proviso had the brick buildings,,but also had a metal building on the side that was the wheel grinding building.

Frank, thanks for the pictures. I like how that they had the different building, and the one track going inbetween.

The more and more I look at the picture that frank posted, I think that would look awesome using metal buildings (pike stuff)

  Keep the ideas coming!!

I'd say go with a combo.  Since it's Soo, you'd probably still have an older structure in use that's been added on to with cheaper building materials (like your Proviso expample).

I wish Bachmann still made the sanding and fueling facilities.....two of the best kits out there.

Since it's Soo in Wisconsin, either the Bachman or Pikestuff seems more like what I saw back in the 80's.  DMT has an old used Magnesun brick 2 stall that is brick, but smaller in scale (I had one on the old layout) that might also be perfectomundo (as Wisconsite Fonzie might say.....) that would be a good basis.

I just picked up one of those American Limited pre built sanding towers, and it is very nice.

If you go Walthers Car Shop, I almost wonder if you could "hint" at a former roundhouse, with concrete slabs near the front of the layout that was a leveled roundhouse formerly connected to that diesel house, sort of like Bensenville on the MILW.

Good to see the master back at work on his layout!

Thanx for all the input guys!!!

I seem to remember buying a boat load of the b-mann building from model expo when they had that sale longgggggggggg ago.

Well here are some pictures for reference.

Here is the area before anything,, sure does seem a nice size.

This was my first idea,,I sure ate up the real estate quick.

Here is the second one that I drew. Kind of like that one better. I also thought about maybe storing the yard power in outgoing pocket, or on the tail end of the yard lead pass the crossovers.

Any input,, good, bad, ugly??? hahaha I made a funny!!

I much prefer the second version over the first.  I like having a run through caboose track as opposed to a stub.  I also like the idea of having some place to stuff the yard power.

Here is the latest version,, a little more non cluttered.

I am going to see how well it works, I wrote down the dimensions of the pieces of track between the switches, cut them to size and lay the switches. We will see what we will see... does it work?? It better!!!! I can always adjust the track when I lay the big pieces.

  Adios till the next version..lol
