Geez. You'd almost have to duck getting in the cab.

I can't recall the exact make & model, but we called those "foghorns" on the SP, the length not nearly as obvious when in their more usual place over the long hood.

Common horn on the B&M in the early diesel years; Referred to them as "blat" horns.

When I started on with my shortline (MD & DE), the RS3m in Federalsburg, Maryland, still had one on its short hood. It is definitely a blat horn with quite  a distinctive sound. I kind of miss it, but the three chime on the long hood side is more impressive.

Yeah, I've heard the big single-chimes referred to as "blats", as well. I guess we called them "foghorns" out West because they sounded, well, like the foghorns the Coast Guard used out there, especially in the SF Bay area. Makes sense, since SP's HQ was downtown SF.

Nothing quite like a still, foggy Bay Area morning with multiple horns in conversation, off in the distance whilst enjoying a coffee and scone. Most evocative.
