I use a product called Structo Lite I get it at Home Cheapo in the drywall products. it is used for the brown coat for plaster . It is cheap and goes along way. pre wet the plaster cloth before appling so it doesn't suck the water from the Structo Lite. It comes in gray color and sets up in about 30 minutes. just when setting up you can scratch strata into it. It is the easyest way that I have found to do land forms. it also will go directly over foam, pink, yellow, blue or white it doesn't matter. It takes paints, dyes and stains really good. Give it a try and let us know.

Also I forgot to mention that it sets up hard and you can put it on as thick as you want, it won't crack. You also don't have to use as much plaster cloth. I think I paid about 13.00 for 80lb bag. It is also light weight. it has small perlite in mix. good luck!

I never found plaster cloth to be of any value in scenery-making. I apply Sculptamold over carved foam insulation board or (for small layouts) layered Foamcore. For rock surfaces, I'll either shape the Sculptamold while it's setting, with some additional carving after it's set, and/or I'll use Cripple Creek rubber rock, which I'll embed in Sculptamold.

This 'mountain' ,er hill used to have a six turn helix inside ( 16" radius down to 8" radius at the top, entry and exit on far side.
I would have hated to try constructing it without plaster cloth.

I'd likely have made a removable shell from Foamcore. But, that's just me.
