Since I have a few BN locos I figure Id whip up a fuel tender, where do I start. I've got tons of reference pics (from the net) but as far as a n scale model where do I start.

I think that the MT 56' general tank car would be a good starting point, in Kalmbachs "The Contemporary Diesel Spotter's Guide 2nd Edition" are some black & white pictures of BN fuel tenders, especially one with the hose connections between the engines and the tender

Thanks for the help Tim, I just purchased the MTL tank car and the decals to make the fuel tender.

There was an article in the April 1988 issue of Model Railroader on how to build a BN fuel tender in HO.  I would imagine that would provide a lot of useful information, despite the difference in modeled scales.

BN Fuel Tenders were converted from various tank cars.

If you can find it there was an excellent article on all of them, roster, capacity, conversion date etc..... in the March 1991 issue of Diesel Era magazine.
N-Scale Railroading also had an article in the March/April 2007 issue.

Plus I wrote an article in N-Scale Railroading (Sept/Oct 2002) on kit bashing a GN 19,000 gallon fuel service tank car starting with an MDC tank car.  A number of these former GN Tank cars were converted into BN Fuel Tenders.

Of the 78 BN Fuel Tenders, 55 were 19,000 gallon's in size. --Brian

This is my plan for the fuel tenders.

Also, only certain units were even able to be connected to the fuel tenders.

Complete list of locos was;

GP38-2: 2100, 2108, 2109
GP40-2: 3054
GP50: 3100-3162
B30-7A: 4000-4119
SDP40: 6394, 6395, 6397, 6398
SD40-2: 6721, 6781, 6785, 6798, 6822, 6823, 7200-7220, 7222-7240, 7242-7291, 8163-8181
SD60: 8300-8302

Got that list from the 1980-1991 BN Annual.

Atlas has produced GP38-2 2109 before.  Some of the SD40-2s are the same body style as the Katos, so could be easy to renumber.

Want to say since the BNSF merger, some of the SD60Ms have been modified to receive fuel from tenders as they are used in the helper pool at Crawford NE.

Also forgot about the 100 LMX B39-8Es were also set up to run with fuel tenders.

Atlas has done 2 or 3 runs of these.

The fuel tenders is a project I have on my list, was going to do close to 6 of the 19,000 gals, but only have 3 or 4 as fuel tenders and the rest as company service tank cars.

And do one in the 25k range
