Atlas PS-2 Covered Hoppers

Just noticed this one.  When did N&W use this paint scheme.  Never seen it before.



Noticed it is a MW car.  Was this their standard color for MW cars?

It's a maintenance-of-way car, sand car I believe.

I see at least one of these almost daily when out trackside along NS in North Carolina.   These and the Southern black cars are used to service engine facilities.

Good for NS modelers... the NW green faded rather quickly...

Oh yeah, Bob asked when ... N&W adopted the "NW" scheme in 1971.

N&W probably assigned these to company sand service some time after that.

Much later... NS was still painting some NW MofW equipment green up to 1988 or so, until the changeover to orange.  I need to dig out some MofW rosters to find out when these cars were put in sand service...

Thatks for all the info.  I have never seen photos or N&W green MOW equipment before.  Learn something new everyday.

Hmm, did Norfolk Western run them in unit trains? I hope so as I ordered 10 of them  :facepalm:

I believe NS used both GREEN and ORANGE at the same time.  Green was for "company service"  - like sand cars and tank cars and Orange was for ballast cars and other actual track MOW equipment.  There are also NS (claytor) lettered tool cars in both green and orange - including SOU cars in Green and NW cars in Orange...

Of course these hoppers would have been painted by NW prior to the merger - or they would have had the Claytor lettering...


Nowadays, they are also using Conrail light gray for a number of things, including tool cars and the flatcars under the camp cars.

  This may be the factor in your believing color denoted service... it's a common belief that Claytor was the last scheme used, but it wasn't, especially for repainted equipment (MofW and in service freight).  While new equipment pretty much did go Claytor up till 86 or so*, repainted equipment pretty much depended on where it was repainted.
  Almost all Southern shop repaints used block NW lettering post-merger (if you've ever seen a boxcar red NW block car... that's a post merger scheme), and plenty of MofW green equipment was repainted in block NW post-merger.  On the other side of the coin, N&W shops repainted Southern grain hoppers in Claytor style SOUTHERN lettering (I saw one (and it's still the only one I've seen) that had NORFOLK SOUTHERN in Claytor on the side, about ten years ago)

So when the change to orange began... it still depended on shop as to scheme


*N&W got new ballast cars delivered in 83-84 that were green (Claytor lettered), they were repainted orange several years later, circa 87-88...
