How did Bachmann and Atlas manage to avoid making the same Alco?
Bachmann the S4 and Atlas the S2.

They could have both done the S2 and still not done the same locomotive. Bachmann has their own ideas of what duplicating reality is.

Sometimes duplication is NOT avoided.

See BLMA and ExactRail "TrinCool" 60' TrinityRail reefers.

Sometimes duplication is deliberate, to replace an older or inferior model (see [HO] Tangent vs. Athearn P-S 4740, Tangent vs. Intermountain 4750, etc.)...

Totally by chance I imagine. With a hole that big in the switcher pool, I don't know how we didn't have 3 or 5 companies trying to plug it with an S unit of some kind!
