My head is swimming after reading the Cobalt installation instructions. Lots of information there, but maybe too much. Can't fault their enthusiasm for the product, tho'!

Yes, their DCC is a wired (not plug-in!) add-on. About the only installation advantage is the board is sized for a matching pocket on the motor case. I was amused by the "quad" version, which is nothing more than four single DCC controllers that haven't been cut apart.

I like what I'm seeing with the Cobalt - I never cared for the size of the Tortoise - but the end-point issues notwithstanding I'm still contemplating Tam Valley boards with cheap micro linear servos like this. (I need to get off my tuckus and build a test setup instead of thinking this thing into the ground...  )

I am intrigued by the linear servo... :)

It's a shame that the Lemaco and Fulgurex switch machines aren't made anymore. I've found that they are bulletproof and some of the linkage parts seem to be easy to make if you have the skills and the correct dies and brass rod. The N-Trak club that i belong to uses them and they live a long time as long as you clean them every 10 or so years and the motors used are the type you might find at radio shack. plus the 4 set microswitch contacts are commercially available and i've seen them advertised in Model Railroader a couple times plus i've come across them on the web as well. The only problem remains that the machines themselves are no longer being manufactured, and if they are they are impossible to find.
I myself am still using twin-coil machines, with peco machines and accessory switches on my module and i just came into a quantity of 30 NJ international machines all brand-spanking-new. for about $1 apiece and that adds shipping cost into the factoring.

In regards to the Cobalt machines, they are just miniature Tortoise clones and are just as reliable (and expensive) but the quality is there if not more so than the Tortoises.

The models with dcc already in them do not appear on their website, and only the add on is shown on the site. This is a different model number though. But maybe it's a pre packaged thing.

The reason I use the dcc decoders is because I use computer control as well. I use JMRI and Railroad & Company for control as well as my throttles.

Eric, I had just seen the centering box on the tam valley site just after I posted this. I may give that a shot. 4 weeks is good as mine were going a few days before messing up.
I WANNA SEE THE BOAT MOVIE!

Yes... I'm in N... Also HO and 1:1

Yes, I see that now. MBK shows the DCP-CB1D model with included DCC for $33. Like you said, no idea if it's just a package deal with the add-on, or if the motor case has the DCC built-in. Curious that it's not on DCC Concept's site.

Ian, apparently the August issue of Model Railroader has an article on mounting tortoises sideways or at angles for space savings. Might want to check out that article before splurging on the Cobolts,
