I tried soaking one in water, and Peteski is right - they dissolve. It takes a while, but they do dissolve after a while. A few minutes didn't seem to do any damage, but I didn't take it out to see what happened if it was left to dry.
On the other hand, some of mine are quite old, as I've saved spare parts from KD/MT couplers as long as I've used them. Even the oldest ones are still good, so human-tolerable humidity doesn't seem to be a problem.
This also explains why my one attempt to glue them, using plastic cement, didn't work... I would be leery of using white glue on them, but that wouldn't work well in aluminum tubing anyway. ACC should work fine, and a coat of petroleum-based paint, such as Floquil, Scalecoat, or Krylon, would protect them from humidity. Flatcar loads shouldn't get wet, and the parts are free or cheap, so it seems worth a try. If it doesn't work you can always throw them away!
