48' Single Unit Well Cars

Question - 48' Single Unit Well cars - like the Athearn (former MDC) model - what are they being used for today?

I imagine the number of 48' containers is pretty small - so my thought would be for heavy 40'/45' or a pair of 20's single stacked.  Or are these being withdrawn or rebuilt?

Yes to both above, plus refuse service. Many of the trash containers in the PNW are 48'ers.

cool thanks....

My Oregon Eastern may well have a Seattle/Portland trash train - with some Atlas cars and containers and a few 48's...

I believe some of the 48' drawbar-connected sets are still in service.  Here is a 2008 shot with 20' cans down below and 53' cans upstairs:

There is at least one 48' articulated set that has been rebuilt with 53' wells (rather than chopped to 40' wells):

I'm not sure if this experiment has been deemed a success or not.  (Apologies to those who can't see the links...)
