That's just $34.72 per car.  Thanks for sharing.  It'll be interesting to note if this auction is bid on.

Gotta be some pretty interesting cars in the collection. Maybe the RW crowd could pool their resources and purchase the lot, then weather them all and sell them at NSC conventions?

Given the original owner; the "rare" cars and the condition of them I would not be surprised to see this go higher then the opening price. The "hard core" MT collectors seem to have deep, deep pockets... plus I'm sure these boxes have the extra special MT air in them................ ;)
Model railroading isn't saving my life, but it's providing me moments of joy not normally associated with my current situation..... Train are good!

Just look at how much less space a railroad uses if all the cars are kept in a drawer!

Best wishes, Dave

Puddington, you are probably correct. Collecting isn't just about the items. If there is a significant story behind the item, it's value increases. And otherwise unavailable items owned by the original creator is a big selling point. I do hope these find a good home. If you don't get collecting, you don't get collecting. It's like obsessing about every detail. Most people just don't get it.

Come to think of it, I need some cars to learn weathering on.  ;D

If the seller is motivated by money they should have split it up. Like like the Pawn Star guy says, whole collections are real neat but eventually someone has to go through it and figure out what it all is and what it's worth and that takes time and time is money.

On the other hand if the goal was to get rid of them, or to let someone else enjoy them (or for some reason there is value to know they are getting a complete box some old duffer at Micro Trains personal collection) selling in one lot probably makes sense, but then why the $20k starting point?

It might fetch $20k, but I bet not all in one lot. Probably would have a better chance of getting there with a lower starting point, let a couple of guys who really want it duke it out vs one sucker bidding once.

I wonder what the listing fee was?

If I had the money, I'd take it and buy a nice convertible.

Don't know how important it is, but it seems most cars are actually from before Micro-Trains, because they're still Kadee. They're from the D in KD, the one who went the HO route...

To a collector, that would be very important. Like a Ford owned by Henry Ford. The asking price is rather impressive.n

A few months ago they tried to sell another lot of cars for a lot of money and didn't get any bids.  Maybe it was this lot.

I agree, they should be selling in much smaller lots or individually.

The N Scale Collectors organization reciently re named N Scale Enthusiasts isn't doing so well auction wise lately. I get their auction notices (have never bid) the last three auctions have ended up with items for sale, you do not have to bit on them which is now a feature of their auctions, buy it or bid on it. They also stopped taking many collections about a year and a half ago because they still had a large inventory of items, they will take new items if they are highly rare and collectable, or locos both brass and plastic. There may still be hard core collectors out there someplace, but with the economy changing there certainly are not as many. The reason for the name change would you believe is bacause large numbers of members are also runners and do not want to be thought of as just collectors of cute little model train cars.
