Anyone know what the general differences are between a VO1000 and an S12?

I'm thinkin' the VO has a longer wheelbase, but I can't confirm that.  The S has a lower long hood, too, if photos are any indication.  But I like the way you're thinking, I'll be paying attention to this one.

I keep thinking it is close enough (with proper disclaimers) for a Mark4 shell.  Leaving me no choice but to build three Sierra Railroad units...

I assume you mean BLW S12 and not the MLW S12.

According to this:

Hmmm, SW1200 reportedly has 22' truck centers. NW2 as well. Maybe one of those actual models is slightly over scale??? Unfortunately, all my reference books and models are in storage...

The S12 can be foobied by reworking the front grill so that it is flat.

in comparing the VO 1000 second carbody to that of the S12 - some of the VO 1000 had multiple stacks, the S12 only 1.  the VO 1000 has the angled front radiator, the S12 does not.  the VO 1000 has fillets along the bottom of the sill, the S12 does not.  the VO 1000 has a curved grab rail at he end of the long hood, the S12 does not.

Yes, but all these are things that can be rectified fairly easily.  An undecorated Atlas model of the later version leaves things like stack location up to the modeler.  On the inside of the shell there are dimples at the most common stack locations that are easy to drill out for a stack.  The rest of it takes a little skill to rectify.

S 12 had a six cylinder prime mover, vs 8 for the VO 1000. That is why it is shorter.
