I have been poking around trying to find some options for detailing a couple of cabeese.

The back story is I have 2 LL NE units that need to be detailed. I saw that Micro Trains has End rails and stacks available. Since I don't own any MT cabs, I didn't know how far out of scale these are. Anyone used these? Anything else available?

Rich, I have the M/T stacks for my LL cabs -- they're much nicer than the model parts.  I don't have an answer on the end rails.  I am hoping that an etched set will appear some time.  I have everything else I need for some LV cabs (except those cool steps).

I believe that Gold Metal Models did some. Don't know if they'd fit though.

Caboose end railings are the suck though, especially when you need to include crash posts.

I have the GMM kit - it's designed for the RR bay window.

Sucks that Walthers is sitting on this tooling. The shell is pretty nice.

Yeah, etched railings for the LL (not  Wally!) caboose would seem to be a "no brainer".

Yeah the GMM kit is for the RR/MP Bay Winder Cabeese. The caboose ends from MTL are incorrect for a LL NE Caboose. I've "had-it" trying to find parts to rebuild them, not to mention the pain in shaving all the details off. I can get good results but I have no wish to be a micro-surgeon.

It would've been nice to see Atlas make one, or some updated tooling from Walthers. For now I'll settle on finding OMI brass, or someone to make a kit or detail set (come on Bob!).

The MT set doesn't look right on a LL NE caboose.


You can see the detail of the crash bars, and the shape of the stairway grabs... MT is more finely detailed, but the appearance is way off.  No crashbars, chain where the arched railing in the middle should be, and straight stairway grabs instead of the scrolled ones.

Something etched would be really nice to have.  Until then, see if you can find a LL caboose to sacrifice to the cause.
