Calling all shutterbugs - lets talk lighting

So with the proliferation of Railwire denizens getting published these days, and my own latent photojournalist looking for an excuse to buy a better camera, what do you use to light photos you take?  If you work outdoors, what's your favorite time of day?  And how do you avoid metling models with high-power photo floods?
