Thanks to Sizemore, I was inspired to make some more progress on my F-unit project. While I'm generally not one to sub contract out work, I had quite a time dealing with painting the red white and black scheme on this F unit. Part of it was a long gap between airbrush jobs, but I think the main culprit was a simple lack of patience.
Anyway, Tim hooked me up with a new shell that he had painted (with considerably better results) and detailed with the maintenance grabs and some other niceties, so the last thing I needed to do was make the decals for the side lettering.
I have access to a pretty good color laser at work (since I live in the city, I regard this as "doing the people's business") and was able to get a decal sheet halfway through the copier before it jammed up. Fortunately, this occurred after the sheet was printed. So, although a bit rumpled, I got what I needed!
Above is the black lettering on white trim film The size is just about perfect, although the lettering is slightly taller than on the Intermountain model. I also made some yellow lettering punched out of a black background, which worked out much better than I expected.
I don't thing the black toner had a chance to fully bond to the decal film, as it wanted to crumble a bit along the cut, but I was able to touch it up with some black paint, and will seal it all with Dullcoat once the rest of the striping is on.
Overall a good experiment, but I think I'd fare a lot better with a small desktop laser writer. That big machine at the office has a very convoluted paper trail...
Now to begin the detailing!
