I know the white overcoat "fading" is a tom mann trademark now...  But, in many cases you arn't bringing enough shadow and contrast back into the model.  Models tend to look like pastel, fluffy pillows with this white overcoat.

No, just operator error in this case.   ;)  The beauty of acrylics is that they are translucent so that the more you paint, the more the mix fades.  So i just did it too much.

The jpgs viewed in the browser also kill a lot of contrast.  When I export to the web from photoshop, it is night and day sometimes.  But, you're right, not enough contrasty-wash has always been a sticky point with me.  I just see it as too much sometimes.

Thanks, who is Bob Rivard?  Do you have a link to his work?

For the trucks: base coat is 2/3s rust, 1/3 grimy black. I then overspray a coat of engine black, and then select areas with dirt.

Bob Rivard is Mr Soo Line!

His Layout based on Shorham Hill was in GMR a few years back, It's quite the thing to see (especialy if you know the Minneapolis area)

This is about all I could find online, not the best examples of his work but gives a general idea.

He has many modeling articles in various magazines.  I did find this YouTube clip:

/>

I heard once that he as a photo for every piece of equipment on his layout.  This includes freight cars.  And I think he shot them.

I have to agree with others about the work (in HO) of Bob Rivard. If it passed through the Twin Cities in the 1970s to 1980s he seems to have recreated it. A quick search of the Model Railroad index (through May 2007) shows he has had 141 articles published. Quite a few are very short one or two pagers in Railmodel Journal, but there is a nice extended article in the December 2007 RMJ that shows some of his techniques on some Soo SD40-2s. People like Tom Mann and Bob Rivard provide me with constant inspiration....now all I have to do is translate that into results!
