This time, some really old ones, copied from negatives by a high school friend.

This one has no date, but is identified as Belfast & Moosehead Lake No. 17 at Burnham Jct., ME. Note the really old style tender trucks:


This one is identified as Boston, Revere Beach & Lynn No. 13, at Orient Heights, MA, on August 30, 1922:


BRB&L NO. 15, same date and location. These are Mason Bogies, where the cylinders and drivers pivoted, so outside valve gear and reverse rod connection atop the boiler was required. Also, vacuum rather than air brakes.:


Next week, CNR steam at Windsor, ON, in 1957.

Gregg, cool pics! 

I just recently read an article on building a Mason Bogies out of wood and before that I never new about the center pivot of the front chassis. The steam comes from the boiler at the center of the drivers at a special joint then pipes take the steam down the frame rails to the cylinders.

Trip north to New York - Part 1
In 1971 some friends and I decided to ride behind PA's on the D&H out of Oneonta, NY.  We wanted to see Alco's since they were far and few in the DC area.  Left the Southern/Amtrak station in Alexandria, Va early morning.  Do some railfanning on the way.  As we were leaving the station what should show up but a Southern RS-2 with a small freight.  Didn't have out camera equipment handy (damn it) so we missed out on photos.  Only time I saw that unit in Alexandria, VA.  Anyway here's some of what we saw on the way.  Near the Wise Potato Chips factory, we cam across this:

Thanks for the photos, Robb. Things appear to have changed under Wick Moorman, as it looks to me like the pilot and trailing trucks have plain rather than roller bearings. Most Class I's these days would just say "truck it". Perhaps a little sanity has returned.

My homeslice and I woke up in Cresson Saturday morning that the 80MACs had come in for servicing, and they were promptly joined by one of their brethren:

Great stuff this week!  Good to see that Berk turning a wheel, even if it's in tow...
Sean, those shots are so good I can smell the creosote...

Since I'm more of a scenery guy, here's some reference shots I've taken.  (You'll notice that most of them are almost completely unsullied by actual trains...  I think they know when I have a day off, and they take the day off, too!)


Ilchester on the old B&O main line past Ellicott City


Steel Trestle on the old PRR Frederick Secondary above Walkersville near Keymar


B&O Johnstown Branch junction at the PRR in Johnstown, near the Cambria Steel Works.


B&O Winchester Branch bridge at Harpers Ferry, WV.  The piers in the foreground are the remains of the original 1840's era bridge, wiped out by Confederate raiders, Union troops and several floods over the years.  The last bridge, a beautiful multi-span Bollman Truss, was wiped out in the 1936 flood.

and last but certainly not least...

The WM bridge at McCoy's Ferry, between Williamsport, MD and Cherry Run.  This is still an active line.
