who can help ? why do I see those decal edges...

I was trying today to get this effect for the CP Rail engine I'm in work with at the moment...
...but somehow it is possible to see the decal edges of the 2nd decal


 


any advise ? not to use chalk at the end maybe... ? or use more dull coat before put chalk on... ?

Looks like you've got two layers of decal film with a common edge.  So you either need twice the amount of clearcoat to fill in and blend the edge...(yikes)  Or better, you need to leave more decal film around the lettering on the bottom decal so you have a stair-step that you can blend out one layer at a time with clear coat.  Right now, you've combined two steps on one edge, and it will be hard to hide.

Could you print both CPs on one decal sheet, just pass it through the printer twice so the white prints on top?

So you printed out a red CPRail on one decal, and then a white CP on another?

the red decal is actually a grey decal and then overpainted with acrylics to represent the overpainted effect...
(I've tested it also with a white and a black decal but the grey one came out best...) I will give it a try with a red one as well...

I would print out a very dark red CPRail on a clear decal sheet, and load it through the printer again and print out a white CP on the same decal sheet.  It has to be a dark CPRail because the alps ribbons are translucent, so make it a few shades darker that what you need.

I have to make it with two different decals - the Alps wont print pure white over any other color - the white will only partially stick on (has something to do with different temperatures for different cartridges...) - good thing for a peeling effect...

  Yeah white doesn't print over other inks well.  But he should be able to print the white first and just change the artwork so the red is cut out where the white goes.

If you still got MS Publisher, there is an easy way to print exactly the decal you want with only one decal.

In MS Publisher (or something else that allows you to layer text) design the decal the way they should look like. I used to text boxes on top of each other with CP on top.



Now you copy both boxes and paste them on the 2. page. MS Publisher puts the boxes in the same spot as the first page. Now you change the font color of the CP to white which covers exactly the space the two letters need on the gray CPRAIL lettering.



On the first page you delete the CPRAIL text box.



Now you print in overlay one after the other and the white letters print directly on the decal sheet.

That is the way I do the DODX and TTX lettering on my decals.

What do the usually say on that Canadian show that runs on Discovery "And that's the way it's done."

wow, all the effort, thank you Roland but I don't have MS Publisher anymore - new HD - no backup - gone ! 

that is how the decals look now on the engine - aftere several of trials and errors (and some more swearing) this is the final result, I wont change it anymore... !

the "overpainted" decals are printed with an OKI DP-5000 with two masks, one for the lettering and figures and one for the red overpaint. I did print the first layer Alps black and the second layer Alps opaque white (which sticks better on other colors) and got a nice gray, over this gray I did print with the second mask two layers of OKI Spot red. the white CP is a 2nd decal printed with Alps normal white...
