Meridian & Bigbee RR

Personally, some of my favorite railfanning is along our nations short line railroads...

Most states have one, some states more than one.
They usually operate with hand-me down & antique equiptment that no one else has or wants. Old work horses from a by-gone era.

The Meridian & Bigbee RR is one of the short line railroads near me.
They are now owned by Genessie & Wyoming, Inc.
http://www.gwrr.com/

They have a small shop & a bunch of odd ball motive power.

Enjoy... 8)

A new piece of power & a caboose has shown up on the property @ Meridian, MS.

The Caboose/Office Car is from the sister road L&D RR.
It is being used as a class room for employee training.

Here's a shot of the L&D RR #1 before it left their property...

Things just keep getting better & better.  ;D

Great pics Glenn.

Wondering if the Bay Line GP38 #502 is still around-reason being it was formerly CR #7760 years ago,
& was used in rear helper service over the grade past where I went to school-used to keep an eye
out for her.

& thanks for letting me know an old friend is still in operation!

The line she worked was the old PRR main thru Canton/Massillon
(that goes thru Crestline, Alliance, etc) & worked helper service
between Canton & Massillon, & it seemed more often than not
she was tied onto a sister GP38 usually in old PC paint.

This was around 1978-79. I was limited in railfan range back
then (12-13 years old) so I have no idea where they tied on,
but I'm pretty sure they cut off at Reed Interlocking just east
of my school. Where they tied on I still have no idea, but it was
neat to watch them work upgrade & 10-15 min later drifting
back downgrade. (The traffic CR ran on that line back then was
incredible-very long upgrade grain trains were normal, & usually
stalled across the road leading to school, causing us to be late.
(yes, we were "so" upset over that!)
But it led to my 1 & only in operation view of a CR Alco RS unit
(in CR blue) eastbound leaving school-what I wouldn't have given
for my Kodak pocket cam then!

The M&B boxcar with the large logo was the scheme originally used when the road first bought and leased boxcars in the late 1970's and early 1980's and when it was still owned by the paper mill it served in Pennington, AL. Like the AN, the M&B had some cars it owned outright and others it leased from ITEL Rail. When GE took over ITEL, the fancy color schemes all went by the boards, as GE told the railroads they would have to pay for any "fancy" schemes. If, and it's a big IF, there are any left in that scheme, you'd be hard put to recognize it, as it would be at least 25 years old.  Used to know a bunch of M&B folks, it even had a VP-Sales based in Atlanta, GA, Walt Weil, at one time. Hal Davison, its VP-Traffic, helped me set up the interline accounting system at the AN. I got to know him when working for the Penn Central.
