the child labor laws were changed because of this work.  i could not phathom this life.  kids are soft nowadays, that's for sure.

the best were the kids who tended the mules in the mines and opened the various chamber doors.

a horrible existence be any standards - king coal, the mighty dollar, and greed.

Coal breakers:

Dude, I LOVE you for posting those sites. Ever since I moved to Central PA, I've been wanting to venture north and see how many of those old breakers are still around. Hopefully this spring...

An illustration of the size concept in my 1st post:

Used to notice the size differences in the 1960s/70s - now I know a bit more (40 years later!)

Man, you gotta stop using HO scale coal in your N hoppers, that really looks unprototypical.  I mean, really!

Thanks for all the information, folks. I intend to model at least one anthracite breaker. (N scale architect has a nice one) Can't imagine my railroad, a latecomer, having more than one left by the late fifties. Now figuring out the business end of that. Frank

My tipple at Vindex will be able to do the variety size trick, it has three tracks.

The next trick will be to make loads that represent the different size lumps.
