I'll get things started. This car started as an Atlas New Jersey Central 2 bay hopper. First, I sandblasted the lettering off. I then "dented" the braces with a hot screwdriver, after seeing the photos I wish I would of done it some other way. I gave the car a wash of Poly S Black and SP Lettering Gray. I did some light weathering on the car. I then scanned the photo and made all the decals except the lube plates, I believe they are called. I applied the "PENNSYL" decals and did some more washes, and then applied the rest of the decals. In person the "PENNSYL" lettering shows up, but not so good in the photos. If I had more time I think I would redo the "PENNSYL". I used some goauche on some of the weathering. I tried to bend the stirrup steps but that didn't work, so I removed them and put .010" x .040" strips of styrene, trying to bend them to look like the photo, didn't work the way I wanted. I also removed the 2 long bars on the left side of the car and added the brace/2 steps ladder. This was one of the most difficult cars I think I have ever done. But it was fun.

  It will probably not look good because I will rush it.

And therefore, you shouldn't bother. If it's worth doing, it's worth taking your time and doing it right. We need to start getting away from this "must win!" mentality...
To be fair, I don't think Iain said anything about trying to 'win it' ... he just wanted to be 'in it', which means he needs to get his entry in before the end of the day, doesn't it ???

I agree that he shouldn't rush it & do a weathering job on the car that he's less than happy with, but Iain definitely should "bother" if it's important to him to participate :P

The weathering challenge is NOT about winning. It's about participating and sharing what you know and learn.

yes, I know, I've started on the wrong side of the car, dooh...  :-[

it's an Atlas PS-2 Hopper Car Pennsylvania #258043, first I've removed all the letterings except the Pennsylvania, then several washes with different "gray" shades, then I've made the dents with a small round file. then I've made all the decals and applied them. another couple of washes with different color shades, this time more "rusty" colors. then I've dullcoated the whole car and applied some dirty spots with "lime" and chalk. the "plate" is made with a piece of colored masking tape. here we go...

Yeah, he should, if it's important for him to be in the voting. But you'll get the same feedback on this forum whether you're in the voting or whether you post the car a little late because you wanted to do your best on it, like I did with the December CNW car. Plus, rushing and not doing your best totally defeats the purpose of the challenge, and you usually don't learn as much when you put a time limit on yourself.

That's more constructive than you're post saying Iain "shouldn't bother" - we want more people participating, whether entered on time & eligible to receive votes, or late & for feedback only, don't we ???

My point was Iain just seemed keen to participate & that should be encouraged - the only people mentioning & criticising the "must win!" mentality that I could see were yourself & Ed :o

If you want to keep crucifying me for not taking the time to blatantly spell out what I meant with my post, go right on ahead. But if you say participating also means submitting a car "late & for feedback only", that supports the thinking behind my original post that got you so fired up...go back and read my post again. The part of Iain's post I quoted was him saying it probably wouldn't look good because he was going to rush it. To THAT, I replied that he shouldn't bother, not that he shouldn't be doing the car at all. You seem to be the only one concerned with me telling him he shouldn't do the car at all, which I did NOT do.

I didn't have enough time to do a better job on a smooth flat coat after decals and before weathering and it shows.



Here's the other side which I did today, too late for the contest but figured I should put it up anyway. Looks much better with the dullcoat over the decals before I weathered it  ;D

Ok Folks-here's mine:



I did a "wash coat" of D&H Grey over the initial PRR lettering, & then weathered with AIM Dark Grey, Dark Earth, & White weathering powders. The trucks were painted Grimy Black with AIM Dark Grey powder brushed on, & the wheels were painted Grimy Black with a AIM Dark Earth brushing.
 
I probably won't be able to enter the challenge every month, but I do plan on doing it again depending on the car selected-it was fun!  ;)

Well, the car STILL has not yet arrived.  This is frustrating because I actually have a use for this car (and therefore a reason for doing it).  I had also wanted to enter the challenge.  Ah, foo!

I didn't have enough 7s to do the road number on the actual car, since Ed and I split a set of decals. So I had to number the car with another one that was on the roster as of 7/95, so I might actually keep this car for my layout. This was my first weathering job with chalks, and I'm pretty happy with how it came out. I was surprised at how easy they were to work with.

FINALLY received the package today; had been shipped a month ago (love the NC postal system!).  Opened it up
CRAP!  All that waiting and I ordered the wrong car! Foo!

Oh well.  I'll weather it anyway.
