The only thing worse that badly painted model cars, is finding out that there is an actual prototype engine that matches the terrible paint job. That KCS engine looks like a kindergarten class project...and now that the photo is out, I'm afraid that someone will produce it in N scale.

Bingo!  It actually was a grade-school-children's project.  For the Bicentennial they had a group of children design their paint scheme.

George:  I remember hearing the story of that one.  I'll have to give them credit:  It may not be "pretty", but it's certainly visible.  No excuse for hitting that one.

If you are asking about the CN's "lifesavers" cylindrical hopper car, I don't know.  Probably over 10 years ago now I found an N scale model of that car for sale, and I liked the colorful scheme, so I bought it (actually, IIRC two manufacturers made that car in N scale).  I really don't know much more about it.  I suspect that only one or few hopper cars were decorated that way.

I wonder if CN painted that hopper that way specifically because of what was in it?  Sounds like they'd want people to be careful around it.

The CN Expo 86 unit was for Expo 86 in Vancouver, no relation to the freight car. The covered hopper was one of a series of cars painted on a single side only promoting the products CN carried, and it was in the late 60's or eraly 70's as I recall... the power was a C630M or M636 in the 1961 large noodle scheme, so it predated the zebra. There was no caboose, just revenue freight cars.

MTL has done the apple and newsprint boxcars. Not sure about the beef boxcar.

Lock4244:  Thank you!  No, if the loco and car weren't related, there wouldn't be any reason to have a caboose.  I'd seen pictures of the car before, but never knew it was only painted that way on one side. 

The KCS loco looks better in the trainspo.com picture, with unfaded paint.  I'd hate to try to paint N scale handrails to match those yellow and black ones!

To the OP: Back in the early 70s, I was a teen member of an HO model railroad club (I could not find an "N" club back then) - there was this particular older HO scale modeler who shall remain nameless. That guy used to bring his models in to the club sessions - behind his back we all referred to his models as "dip jobs" . The appeared to (most of) the rest of us that he tied a string to one end and then dipped the model in a can of household latex paint.
