If you are thinking of removing one or more- I would be interested in acquiring one or two for a special layout project.

Awesome John, but pretty large.  Thinking the BLI unit is self contained and small.

Not sure why a pump was needed, wouldn't convection from the heater alone make the smoke rise?

Seuthe has been  making smoke generator units for many decades.  Just do a Web search for "seuthe smoke generator". Looks like Walthers carries them. But I know  that you are on a budget, so maybe you'll find one second hand.

Could make your own with some nicrome wire and some brass tubing.
I made one about 20 years ago this way for a 20.3 scale caboose.
